Mari Boya continued Campos Racing’s strong form at the Sakhir in-season test by ending Day 2 of running with the fastest time, leaving it late in the afternoon session to complete a 1:48.640.
The Spaniard was 0.282s clear of Louis Sharp in second, the Rodin Motorsport driver showing good pace having also ended with the quickest time in the morning segment.
Day 2 was off to a quick start with the fastest time changing hands several times early on, but it was eventually Van Amersfoort Racing’s Santiago Ramos that set the pace on a 1:48.843.
Ramos’ time was over two-and-a-half tenths clear of second-placed James Wharton, but with 20 minutes gone, Campos Racing’s Mari Boya eclipsed the Mexican’s time by 0.107s to go to P1.
As the hour mark approached, Rodin Motorsport’s Louis Sharp rocketed to the top of the timesheets, beating Boya’s lap by just 0.330s, thanks to his 1:48.703.
Tuukka Taponen made it even tighter at the top moments later when he went up to second, the ART Grand Prix driver just 0.024s off Sharp’s leading time.
There were no further changes to the top of the timesheets, as the teams ran on their used tyres. Tim Tramnitz and Bruno del Pino’s 40 laps were the most in the morning session.
Rafael Câmara’s 1:51.236 was the early benchmark once running got back underway. The TRIDENT driver was 0.286s clear of Ramos out front, until MP Motorsport took over the top three.
Tramnitz went fastest with a 1:50.410, before going even quicker on his next push lap to a 1:50.205. This put him 0.527s clear of Bruno del Pino with Alessandro Giusti in third, over six-and-a-half tenths behind his teammate’s leading time.
The German improved once again on his next push lap to go onto a 1:50.119, but his lead was reduced by Giusti moments later, the Williams Driver Academy member now just 0.069s off the pace.
On his next attempt, Tramnitz dropped down into the 1:49s, but he was now second away from Santiago Ramos. The VAR driver’s 1:49.768 was enough to put him 0.055s clear of his MP rival.
As we entered into the final hour of the day, Hitech TGR made their move up the leaderboard. Gerrard Xie led the way with a 1:49.416, just 0.017s quicker than Martinius Stenshorne, as Joshua Dufek rounded out the top three.
But there were more changes to come at the top as the day entered into its final 10 minutes. Wharton and Sharp took turns in P1, before Boya put Campos Racing on top with a 1:48.640.
Several drivers were able to improve their times later on, but Boya remained untouched, sealing P1 by 0.282s to Sharp, with Wharton in third for ART.
The drivers will get one final day of in-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit tomorrow, starting at 09:30 local time.
